A. Lange & Söhne Explores Auroras in Iceland

This year, A. Lange & Söhne explores the fascination of nature in its own way. The famed watchmaking house embarks on a journey to Iceland with three of its most sophisticated creations in order to explore one of Mother Nature’s most breathtaking phenomena, auroras.

The interplay between darkness and light is perfectly depicted with the northern lights that illuminate the Arctic sky above Iceland. This Nordic expedition highlights three models that marked the house’s watchmaking expertise: the Grande Lange 1 Moon Phase “Lumen”, the Zeitwerk “Luminous” and the Grande Lange 1 “Lumen”.

Wondering how these watches made it to this discovery journey? These timepieces stand out by their luminous displays that need a light source to charge the luminous compound applied to the display elements and allow them to glow in the dark.

Entitled “Northern Lights”, this video was captured in three different locations of Iceland that reflect, in a way or another, the watches’ creation process. While the Black Beach at Vík í Mýrdal and its black lava make for the perfect background of the three “Lumen” timepiece’s black dials, rhodiumed gold hands and the green shimmer of their luminous displays, the mountains and glaciers of Langjökull reflects the interaction of heat and cold used in the creations of the watches’ bezel, case middle and case-back. Steam, which plays an essential role in the creation of the Grande Lange 1 Moon Phase “Lumen”, is captured at the Valley of the geysers in Haukadalur – where the Strokkur sees a rough eruption of boiling water and hot steam every 15 minutes.

Inspired by the northern lights – which appear green to the eye during a few days between September and March – these places in Iceland constituted the perfect backdrop to highlight the expertise that lies behind these three stunning “Lumen” models.
