Meet Kaya Scodelario, New Face of Cartier’s Clash Collection

A talented Brazilian-English actress such as Kaya Scodelario is definitely the perfect fit to embody the true spirit of a distinguished jewelry collection, and not just any jewelry collection – we’re talking about Cartier’s Clash! With the beginning of her acting career in 2007 and with her film debut in 2009, Kaya made a name for herself in the film and television world through successful roles such as Effy Stonem in E4 teen drama “Skins”, Teresa in “The Maze Runner” film series and Carina Smith in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”.

Now, she adds the privilege of being Cartier’s new ambassadress to her portfolio. Luckily for us and our readers, Azyaamode got the opportunity to meet her during the launch of the Clash collection in Paris. Join us to get to know more about her, the start of her collaboration with Cartier and more!

How did this collaboration with Cartier start?
I took a meeting in New York with their marketing team. We sat down and we discussed who I was and who I wanted to represent. I’ve never really been an ambassador of a brand before so, it was really important to me for it to be a good fit. I think it’s very important that this comes across in the films and the photographs if you feel that the present has a connection to the brand. We spoke a lot about me being part Brazilian, part British and that was really interesting because I‘ve never really had the chance to celebrate my culture like that before. They were really interested in that, as they thought that kind of represented the two sides to the jewelry, the two feminine sides to me – the loud and bright Brazilian side and the more subdued British side as well. It just felt that it was a really good match and it made sense. I loved the pieces, I loved the concept for the film, I loved that I was able to play a character as well. I thought it would be a lot of fun and it was a brand that I would be proud to be a part of.

Do you have a memory in the past with the Maison Cartier, something you remember from your childhood?
I actually told the story during my meeting with the team. My husband bought me the Love bangle on the first Christmas for us together and I mentioned the brand and its beautiful jewelry pieces to him while we were dating. On our first Christmas together, he pulled out my gift and he told me that it made him realize that he wanted to buy me an engagement ring and propose. So, he kind of proposed with the Love bangle. That has always been very special to me.

As the new face of Cartier’s Clash collection, how do these pieces represent you?
I love the ring, it’s actually my favorite. I love that you can stack the pieces and they kind of fit quite perfectly together. The movement in them is quite fascinating as well. I really appreciate engineering in jewelry. I think it’s still soft and has fluidity yet looks strong. It’s like a living piece. It breathes with your body as you move. I like that and think that it really represents me. I love the single earring as it’s something quite punk rock, quite British and cool and allows to have a bit of personality with it as well. It stands out from the crowd which is something I really wanted to do in these pieces.

How important do you think jewelry is in your life as a modern woman?
I think it’s a really fun way to show your unique personality with an outfit. For me, when I am at work, I can’t wear anything because I’m in character, in a costume and in costume jewelry. So, when I am not at work, I really appreciate being able to have my things that feel like home to me and feel like me. So, I am very protective of my special pieces of jewelry and the things that I wear all the time. But then, I like to be able to mix them up with something else depending on what city or country I am in, and depending on the occasion. For example, this kind of feels very Parisian for me, but when I am in New York, I really love wearing bangles because they show strength and fun at the same time.

If you were to choose one piece of Clash jewelry, would it be the necklace, the bracelet, the ring or the earring?
This is really hard, but I would pick the ring because I love my mother’s hands and I have them. So, to me, when I look at my hands I see my mom, I see all the women in my family. This would make them feel quite special and important.

Are you familiar with the Middle East, the Middle Eastern women and their love for jewelry?
I spent some time in Qatar. I was there for the film festival and it was my first time in the Middle East. It was really eye-opening for me. I met some very beautiful women and I could really appreciate how their landscape influences their fashion and their beauty. They have those gorgeous yellows and deep reds, and the warm colors reminded me of my mom. I actually took her with me and she fell in love. But I could really tell how the landscape and the culture influence how the women dress and I loved it.

Besides the Love bracelet, is there any other Cartier piece that you would like to have?
I love their classic timepieces; they’re really beautiful and timeless. Such a watch works with every generation: I can see my mom wearing it but I also feel like in my twenties, I can wear it and it feels relevant still. In fact, it’s very special to be able to create a piece that travels through generations.
