A Conversation with Micol Sabbadini

Photographer Micol Sabbadini has done it all, from capturing the beauty of countries to taking exceptional shots of dreamy landscapes. And now she has won the heart of the fashion industry as well, promoting and stoking the conversation about the timeless relationship of photography and fashion.

The artist, who had previously done tremendous work for worldwide publications, has took it upon herself to collaborate with Weekend Max Mara on a 12-piece Summer capsule collection. The result? Sea-inspired landscapes and an endless summer vibe. And with a taste like that of Micol’s, how could one not swoon over the collection?

We had a little conversation with the famed photographer to talk about her collaboration, her inspirations and more…

Can you tell us more about your collaboration with Weekend Max Mara? How did it come to be?

Maria Giulia Maramotti saw the work I had done for an Italian scarf company where I adapted my photos from an Art Show I did in Australia, in order to print them on their scarfs.

She loved it and so we started talking about how it would be great if I created some prints using my photographs for a capsule collection of clothes. And so it started from a blank canvas and my photography archive. We picked the images I had shot during a boat trip in the Aegean Sea; and from there I started selecting elements from my pictures and transforming and adapting them so that the final collage would work on a skirt, a shirt, a t-shirt, pants, a dress and bags.

You’re a photographer who loves to travel; how did you incorporate your passion into the brand's identity?

It kind of happened naturally, I love fashion, I love creativity, I love quality and I love photography so this was the perfect opportunity for all those things to come together. It was a natural evolution.

In your opinion, what is the appeal of your work?

The colors... and that it ‘takes you somewhere’ with your mind, it makes you travel.

What was the mood behind this capsule collection?

Vacations, the sea, boats, adventure, free spirit, enjoying the moment, a mental escape.

What is your favorite piece from this capsule collection?

The skirt for sure! I love 50’s skirts and I also love that many elements are present in the skirt.

Did you always want to mix your photography skills with the world of fashion?

Yes. I’ve been studying photography since I was 14 and that was also the first time I attended a haute couture show with my mom in Paris. My Dad is an art collector and my mom is a huge fashion lover, so I grew up between art shows and clothes; so blending these 2 worlds in one in my work is a perfect fit. It allows me to develop my aesthetics in 2 different fields that I love.

Describe the capsule collection in one word.

Sailing Trip (that’s 2 words, sorry!)

In your opinion, who’s the woman wearing the pieces?

A woman who loves colors for sure, a woman who likes to get away (either for real or just with her mind).

Do you think it will be something you'll pursue once more?

Yes for sure, I loved doing it and I realized I have endless possibilities using my archive to create prints and patterns, so I definitely want to do more.

What’s next for you? Any new fashion collaborations?

 Ask me in 6 months?
