A Conversation with Maitha BelJafla and Fatma Al Falasi of Braille Dubai by Damas

Emirati designers Maitha BelJafla and Fatma Al Falasi have joined forces with Damas as part of the latter’s program to support young talents and the result was an exceptional jewelry collection that finds inspiration in Braille, the tactile script composed of dots used for visually impaired individuals. With distinctive positive messages adorning the pieces, it’s all about raising awareness in a stylish way.

Can you tell us about the vision that lies behind your collection?

The key inspiration to our collection is Braille, a beautiful script made for visually impaired individuals and it presents them with an air of confidence, independence and liberation besides literacy. We were keen that this language is not lost in a world overpowered by technology. We envisioned a collection that would raise awareness and voila! This was the start of “Braille Dubai” by Damas.

What were the values that brought you together with Damas and Noor Dubai to design these jewelry pieces?

As young girls, we grew up enticed by the beauty of jewelry and our determination to raise awareness grew profoundly over the years. We were thrilled to be a part of Damas Jewellery’s program where they encourage regional young talents. 10% of the sales on our collection “Braille Dubai” go to Noor Dubai Foundation to support their vision. This was a dream come true because Damas Jewellery gave us the opportunity to bring our collection to the spotlight while giving back to the society.

What challenges did you face while bringing this idea to life?

Creating a collection that is outstanding when it comes to being trendy and at the same time a manifestation of awareness was not easy. Braille is a language not everyone is acquainted with and our determination to promote awareness was the stepping stone.

How did you manage to bring your vision and style together?

Overwhelmed by the love for jewelry and the passion to raise awareness, our vision is a reality. As young designers, we knew what would be appealing to consumers and with constant support from Damas Jewellery we managed to exceed our expectations and reach out to consumers.

What’s next for you?

We really look forward to participating in camps held by Noor Dubai Foundation and support their efforts. As for our brand, we wish to showcase our collection internationally alongside Damas Jewellery.
