With all the chatter about Meghan Markle marrying Prince Harry, we can’t help but wonder what the beautiful lady will have to change in her fashion style. And as it turns out, the answer is “a lot”. Indeed ladies, earning the “Duchess” title comes with a whole lot of responsibilities, with acting politically correct in public, dressing adequately to social events and respecting the Queen’s fashion guidelines.

So yeah, you want to be a Princess? Think again! Marrying into the royal family means restrictions, restrictions and some more restrictions! But to clarify things for you, we’ve scoured the most common Royal Family rules when it comes to fashion so you can have a true taste of what it’s like being a princess.

  1. Dresses over pants. Always. So we guess Meghan Markle should bid farewell to her pantsuits?
  2. When it comes to colorful nail polish, the answer is always no. We don’t know if you’ve ever noticed, but all members of the Royal Family wear neutral nail polish.
  3. Pantyhose are simply a must. So whenever you see Royals wearing dresses or midi skirts, know that they’re surely wearing pantyhose as well.
  4. Cleavage is certainly not allowed, but that’s what “hide your cleavage” bags – or clutches – were created for. In fact, Lady D was famous for holding them!
  5. Taking off a coat in public is frowned upon, mostly because it’s very unladylike.
  6. The queen needs to approve Royal wedding dresses. So yeah, Kate Middleton’s Alexander McQueen gown? Approved by the Queen. Meghan Markle’s Givenchy gown? Also approved by the Queen.
  7. Royals must always have a black outfit prepared in their suitcase in case of an unexpected death.
  8. Tiaras are only reserved to married women in the Royal family. Not children nor single women.
  9. The Queen always wears hats, as a nod to an old tradition that women should cover their hair in public. But now, this rule is reserved for formal occasions and public outings.
  10. If you’ve ever seen picture of the Queen, you’ve probably noticed that she always wears bright colors. Well that’s simply so she could be noticed in a crowd. Smart, huh?
  11. The Queen has also a purse trick. If she’s attending a dinner and puts her purse on the table, that means she’s sending a signal that the dinner is soon over. And if she’s holding a conversation with a certain someone and changes hands with her purse, it means that the conversation is over. Sending signals like a pro!
  12. And last but not least, Prince George doesn’t just wear shorts because he looks adorable in them. He also has to, because only older boys and men can wear trousers, according to British Royalty and aristocracy.

So how about that princess title now?
