How to Make Your Own Wax

I have memories of my mom and aunt making wax at home in Lebanon. Once I became a teenager, we had the kindest lady named Rebeca come to our house with a big pot to wax for us. It quickly became a fun social hour when we would catch up on the latest gossip as my mom and her drank coffee. She literally became part of the family almost like a grandmother. She would bring cut up fabric which were cotton sheets and she said she would just wash them in the machine and the wax would just melt off. As I grew older, the entrepreneur in me suggested we bottle it and sell it, but that never really happened and she is now retired. As a matter of fact, the recipe was so easy anyone could make it at home. All you need are two cups of sugar, ¼ cup lemon juice and ¼ cup water and a saucepan. I remember she would always lick a bit off the spoon to check the temperature. The great thing about this wax is that it dissolves and is edible and most likely won’t cause breakouts because of the simple ingredients. To cook it you just set the temperature medium to high and keep stirring. Make sure you are stirring constantly as that is the key to getting it right. Once you see a caramel looking color the wax is ready. You have to wait for it to cool before you use it. I’m sure our dear Rebeca had her own little secrets, but it seems pretty easy and takes a little practice and patience.
