Van Cleef & Arpels Celebrates 50 Years of Alhambra Long Necklace

When we say “icon of luck”, the first thing that comes to mind as jewelry enthusiasts is Van Cleef & Arpels’ Alhambra creations. Inspired by the four-leaf clover, this icon graced a long necklace for the very first time in 1968 to embody the house’s timeless style and unique savoir-faire. In fact, that’s the least we can expect from a house that was once guided by the words of Jacques Arpels – Estelle Arpels’ nephew – who said: “To be lucky, you have to believe in luck”. Held dear by Van Cleef & Arpels, this quality inspired many of the latter’s emblematic creations.

The four-leaf clover actually made its first appearance in the house’s records in the 1920s. Meeting huge success, it soon became an icon of luck and an emblem of Van Cleef & Arpels throughout the world.

“Created by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1968, in keeping with its tradition of excellence and savoir-faire, the Alhambra long necklace captured the spirit of the age and introduced new ways of wearing jewels in everyday life. Fifty years later, it stands as a reference that has profoundly influenced the history of jewelry,” said Nicolas Bos – President and CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels.

When it was first created, the Alhambra long necklace was showcased in the Paris La Boutique range. Through its color and material combinations, it redefined easy-to-wear pieces that are as timeless and glamorous yet more accessible than high jewelry.

Fifty years after unveiling this iconic long necklace that has adorned many legendary celebrities such as Françoise Hardy and Romy Schneider, the Maison celebrates this occasion with new styles – think a Vintage Alhambra long necklace and bracelet and Magic Alhambra earrings that combine gray mother-of-pearl with sparkling diamonds and pink gold. In addition to this set, Van Cleef & Arpels also enriches this timeless family with a Vintage Alhambra long necklace and bracelet combining onyx, diamonds and white gold.
