My Hair Story: Going Dark

Admit it! We all want what we can’t have. I was born with curly dark, almost black hair. My hair has been straight and almost blonde for many years. Every summer I go and get a balayage which turns into a grown out ombre. I’ve gone from caramel to bleach blonde and have basically fried my hair. As I approach the big 4-0 I have made a major promise to myself which, I’ll be the first to admit, I may or may not keep. I will never go blonde again. This last time I went blonde, it was not by choice. Bad things do happen when you cheat on your hairdresser. I went in asking for a few thin highlights, but I left with almost blonde hair. Every good hairdresser knows that you don’t go blonde overnight and that it’s a gradual process. Not only was my hair severely damaged but I also didn’t want such a light color going into Fall and Winter. I lived with it for a month or so because I didn’t want to damage my hair even more. Finally, I called my old hairdresser and he squeezed me in. He touched up my roots and gave me a much darker tone. I looked in the mirror with a sigh of relief. I was me again! I embraced my brunette locks. Although I am still changing the texture of my hair by straightening it, but I am staying true to the real me, a brunette! So far, I love it and I know getting shiny healthy hair is a process. I try to only blowdry it on the weekends, and in between washes I slather on some coconut oil to help with the dryness.
