Extensions 101

I’ve only worn extensions once, which was on my wedding day and they were the clip-on kind that you can easily take off. With curly thick hair I really never attempted to getting extensions, but I have so many friends that do. It instantly transforms their hair, and the results are so beautiful. But many women complain about sitting for hours in a salon chair only for said beautiful extension, only to have their hair fall out eventually. So what are the options and pros and cons of the different types?
First of all, there is the human hair type and the synthetic hair type. The best way to know is from the price. If it’s super affordable, chances are it’s synthetic.
Besides clip-ons, the next kind is “tape-in” where the hair is literally glued or taped onto your hair by a stylist. The only downside I see sometimes is that you can see the tape if you look up close.
Next is the sew-in, which takes even more time, but is less obvious to the naked eye.
There’s also Keratin extensions which use a keratin-based glue.

And last but not least I-tips, which are like little beads that are crimped onto your hair and no glue is used.
Now that you know all the different kinds, talk to a professional about your choices and what suits your hair type and lifestyle the most. If you decide to get any kind, and later opt to getting rid of them, make sure to only let a professional remove them, because that’s usually when the most damage happens.
